So the kids are back to school, back to homework, back to sports and clubs and life’s busy-ness. We know what that means… life can get chaotic without a home that properly supports you! That’s why Barbara Trachy, Vice President of Marketing at TRI Pointe Homes, makes it her mission to show model home visitors the most fabulous ways to put your home to work. This month, we bring you Barbara’s go-to strategies on family-friendly design.

Kensington Residence 1 Loft: Here’s the room that does it all—homework, movie night, slumber parties—you name it!

One of the perks of buying a new home is floor plan design that takes modern living into account. Case in point: the bonus room. Many of TRI Pointe’s model homes feature these sought-after spaces. “We love to program bonus rooms as do-it-all spaces. Where else can you incorporate a built-in piece with media center, homework stations and extra storage? And let’s be honest… life happens and kids are kids with lots of stuff. The bonus room gives mom a break too. She doesn’t have to shove a mess into the closet when the doorbell rings.”

St. James Residence One Loft: Who doesn’t love a mommy-and-me space?

Want to bring out the teacher in you and the student in them? How about matching desks? We love the idea of dual work zones. They’re perfect for pre-schoolers and home-schoolers alike. Barbara noted: “We love designing homes for growing families because it’s such an exciting stage of life. And we know that raising little ones requires special attention. You probably need a space where you can keep a close eye on every step. That’s when a loft space designed for two (or more!) is really smart.”

A trio of hardworking alcoves: We love the personalized chalkboards that keep kids on task.

“Our consumer research tells us that our customers still want a space in their home that’s designed for work. Drop the mail. Pay bills. Write your grocery list. Plan family vacations. Do homework. The alcove can be the place to get it all done,” reported Barbara. Whether it’s a desk in the kitchen, an alcove off the great room, or a high-function command center, your home should be practical for your lifestyle. Of course, these spaces offer great organization, but they can also showcase your family’s personality and design sense with quality cabinetry and fun accessories.

Hooks or cubbies? Organization should always look this good!

We know the drill. Backpacks mysteriously end up in the middle of the hall on the way from the car to the TV. Solution? Designate a drop zone. Maybe your drop zone is a cabinet in the hall where everyone leaves their keys and phones. Or create a full wall of convenient cubbies, shoe slots, shelves, drawers … you get the idea. It can even be a row of hooks for miscellaneous items from the dog leash to the re-useable grocery bags. Take Barbara’s advice: “Even the smallest of spaces can add the biggest of impacts to everyday life. Make every inch count!”
