Think about it: Flooring is one of the most high-impact elements of your home. It takes a beating, holding up to everything from soccer cleats to high heels to the pitter patter of little ones, including the four-legged fur babies. But more importantly, it can make one heck of a design statement! Which is why this month we rounded up a bunch of inspirational photos of some of our favorite looks. Are you ready to be floored?

At Talus, wide-plank wood floors are finished in cool, contemporary grey, making their distinctive grain pattern pop. The hue is echoed in pale dove-grey walls, and balanced by sleek, white, flat-front cabinetry. Together, the combo could read icy cold, but black accents and the earthy texture of an off-white stone backsplash inject the space with warmth. Think of it as modern for traditionalists.

Bradford Residence One: Kitchen

Deep, rich, espresso-toned wood floors telegraph timeless luxury. Like at Bradford, where they provide gravitas in an otherwise ethereal kitchen. The dark hue grounds a mixture of light-reflecting colors and materials, from the island’s glossy white countertop to glowy cream cabinetry. Even the variegated stone backsplash seems to glimmer, thanks to sunlight streaming in through glass doors opening onto the California room. The key to pulling off dark wood floors is copious amounts of natural light. Less moody, more majestic.

Viridian Residence Three: Great Room

What’s the secret to Scandinavian chic? Crisp contrast and natural materials paired with neutral colors. This great room at Viridian fits the bill, and it’s all about those slightly distressed, honey-toned wood floors. They form a warm base layer for cool white walls and graphic stone-grey trim and kitchen cabinetry. Scandi style is modern with a traditional side, so farmhouse floors and old-world wainscoting pair perfectly with clean-lined furnishings. Curl up and get cozy!

Alston Residence Two: Bath

Wood-look tile is one of the wonders of the modern world. Etched with fine-grain patterns, it even feels like wood underfoot. But in a water-splashed spa bathroom or high-traffic (and potentially high-mess) kitchen, it offers incomparable durability. So go ahead and step from that soaking tub at Alston directly onto the distressed-wood-look tile floor (we love how all these neutral tones create a serene vibe).

Paloma Residence Three: Kitchen

And clean up kitchen spills quick-like at Paloma, where dark wood-look tile flooring balances light cabinetry. Low maintenance has never looked so glam.

Varenna Residence Three: Great Room

Tile’s durability means it can withstand just about anything, including weather and the test of time. Take this great room at Varenna featuring neutral large-format tile. It’ll hold the space for years to come, even if décor tastes change—just swap out the rugs and furnishings. And it crosses the threshold into a California room, creating one big, beautiful indoor-outdoor living space.

Viridian Residence Two: Cabana

An outdoor room at Viridian offers another take on tile, elevating the poolside casita with slabs of textured stone in place of concrete and wrapping the pool for a high-end resort vibe. Dive in!
