Little Home Enthusiasts, Big Style
We’ve never met a kids’ room we didn’t love. Because it is the one space in the house where you can just go crazy and let all of your creative impulses run wild. Kids love wild! And here’s the best part. When we say kids’ rooms, we’re not just talking about bedrooms. We’re talking about playrooms and nurseries and loft spaces. Any place where a kid can be a kid. But how do you maximize the fun, wild and crazy without teetering over into ‘hot mess?’ Our talented designers have a few tricks up their sleeves for creating stylish spaces perfect for the littlest home enthusiast in your life. Take a look at a few of our favorite kids’ rooms and start getting inspired.
Room #1 – A is for Awesome
Upstairs Loft at Alston: Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up with a good book inside that teepee? An upstairs loft is a great space to color, craft, play and develop a life-long love of learning. Scaling some of the furnishings to child proportions makes the space personal and welcoming. Balancing the bold graphics with a neutral color scheme and earthy materials subdues the wacky factor.
Room #2 – Tutu Cute
Child’s Bedroom at Varenna: Sweet doesn’t have to be saccharine. On the color wheel, red and green are complementary opposites, so using olive shades with pink is actually a no-brainer that injects this frilly space with sophisticated style. Clean white furnishings and bedding (check out that tulle bed-skirt!) are calming, while a dazzling light fixture adds drama. Totally on-pointe.
Room #3 – Safari Style
Nursery at Aria and Sterling: Check out that wallpaper! We love a strong accent wall. This one establishes the jungle theme but in soothing colors that balance dreamland with wild kingdom. Built-in bookcases create architectural structure and a nook for the crib, while also doubling display and storage space. Earthy colors and textures keep things soft and grounded.
Room #4 – Petite Playroom
Flex Room at Varenna: They’re the center of your universe, so why not give them their very own space? At Varenna, a backyard play room has its own garden entrance—complete with a child-scale Dutch door. Inside, it’s a celebration of all things small, from the table and chairs to bookshelves.. And since kids have a lot of small things, a system of baskets, numbered bins and glass jars help corral the clutter so all you see is the cute.
