Actor Tim Robbins has served as an inspiration to the young students at Burbank Elementary School, located across the way from Blackstone. As part of the White House initiated Turnaround Arts Program, Robbins has been mentoring students and rehearsing with a group of third-grade students, the musical, “The Jungle Book.”

The school is one of 49 selected nationwide and only 10 in California selected by the White House as a Turnaround Arts School under the program started by First Lady Michelle Obama. Burbank Elementary is now ranked on of the highest schools in the district because of its innovative programs.

Turnaround Arts transforms priority schools through the strategic use of the arts in which all students engage in a well-rounded education, exuding confidence, critical thinking and creativity.

“Arts education isn’t something we add on after we’ve achieved other priorities like raising test scores and getting kids into college. It’s actually critical for achieving those priorities in the first place. That’s what the Turnaround Arts program is all about.” – First Lady Michelle Obama
