Brighten the Holidays with a Beautiful Poinsettia

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, seasonal plants and flowers are a great way to infuse a fresh and vibrant ambiance into any home décor.

Earthy green pine and bright red poinsettias offer a traditional holiday feel, but for something a little different, consider a Princettia Pink. This succulent plant is sometimes referred to as the beautiful younger sister of the poinsettia with its sweet, bubble gum pink blooms.

Like her big sis, the pink holiday flower loves to bask in natural light and enjoys a drink of water just once a week because this blushing beauty is actually drought-tolerant. And best of all, these soft-shaded blooms are non-poisonous and can be kept alive and thriving all year long.

Whether vibrant red or bashful rose, simply keep your poinsettias warm, water them with a delicate spray mister and consider nourishing them with a high-potassium, low-nitrogen food source once a month to extend their life.

Trim back the leaves in the spring and then prepare the poinsettias to blossom once again in December. Because this poinsettias flower with the darkening hours of winter, consider coaxing them to bloom by placing the plants in total darkness for at least 12 hours each night for approximately 10 weeks before Christmas.

Then, enjoy your poinsettias during the holiday and as a wonderful reminder of seasonal magic throughout the year. For more beautiful poinsettia images by Jan Fetler, visit UCCE Sacramento County Master Gardners‘ Facebook page.
