When you live at Atwell, there’s no need to travel long distances to discover breathtaking fall scenery. Beautiful views are within striking distance of home in virtually any direction. Here are a few spots to check out.
Etiwanda Falls
Love waterfalls? Check. Want a hike that is relatively short, but challenging? Check. Close to home and with accessible parking? Etiwanda Falls in Rancho Cucamonga checks all the boxes. Just about 50 miles from Atwell, this 3.4-mile roundtrip hike takes you through the foothills of the San Bernadino Mountains to Etiwanda Falls. There, enjoy a shady picnic and splash in the cool water, before making your return trek. Along the way, you will be treated to beautiful views and may spot some wildlife. Note, most of this popular trail is not shaded so bring plenty of water and arrive early in the day for cooler temps and fewer crowds. Parking at the trailhead is $3.25 for four hours.
Lake Hemet Recreation Area
Lake Hemet sits at a 4,340-ft. elevation in the San Jacinto Mountains, offering outdoor enthusiasts stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Rent a boat for a few hours on the water, or just enjoy a lazy day along the shoreline. You’ll need to purchase an Adventure Pass ($5 per day or $30 for an annual permit) at the Lake Hemet Market on Highway 74. The recreation area is located near Riverside, about a 40-minute drive from Atwell.
Just about 25 miles from Atwell lies the iconic mountain hamlet of Idyllwild. Nestled between Mountain Center and Pine Cove, this unincorporated town has no human mayor but has plenty of everything else when it comes to natural beauty. In fact, a visitor’s biggest challenge here may be deciding what to do. Choose from hiking, rock climbing, biking, fishing or just meandering through the local art galleries and boutiques. But if it’s fall scenery you came for, head out on one of the many trails through thickets of native trees and along streams.
One of the best things about living at Atwell is having national forests and mountains just minutes away. Less than 40 minutes north, you can savor the beauty of Southern California’s tallest waterfall, Big Falls in Forest Falls. If you want to hike the falls, check in at the Mill Creek Visitor Center for day passes. And, tread carefully as rocks near the falls can be slippery.
