Whether you’re a design expert or newbie, Bobby Berk’s new book, Right at Home, has something everyone can learn from. Part memoir, part Design 101, and part therapeutic reset guide— Bobby unveils the inner workings of his iconic aesthetic, igniting an irresistible desire in readers to have him craft their dream homes.

One of the many reasons we love collaborating with Bobby at Tri Pointe Homes® is his expert way of illustrating the design principles we live by. In his book, he outlines how great design is not only beautiful, but can also make your life easier and create less stress. At Tri Pointe Homes, we call thatLiveAbility™. We’re passionate about creating spaces that are convenient for all. Some of the ways we feature LiveAbility in Tri Pointe Homes communities include:

  • Open airy spaces that promote togetherness and expand sightlines throughout the home

  • Ample natural light to promote well-being

  • Seamless indoor-outdoor transitions that promote relaxation and provide gathering spaces for people and pets

In Right At Home, Bobby discusses how great design makes every part of your life easier. Offering a playful perspective on the roles of the home, he calls the dining room your “maitre d” and your kitchen the “sous-chef”. As he puts it: “the three key attributes to a functional kitchen are (1) visibility (2) convenience and (3) community.” We take a similar approach when designing our kitchens and some of the ways we plan for functionality are:

  • Ample storage to reduce visual clutter while giving everything a place it belongs

  • Thoughtful lighting choices provide options based on your intended use of a space: recessed downlighting for a well-lit workspace and individual fixtures or under cabinet lighting when you need something a little softer

  • Selecting LivingSmart® energy-efficient appliances and the latest technology (such as touch faucets) to help seamlessly streamline your kitchen

“Thoughtfully setting up your home is an act of self-care." -Bobby Berk

Bobby also emphasizes the significance of investing in mental wellness, highlighting the role our homes play in balancing our mood and well-being. He encourages individuals to approach home planning with mindfulness and intention. Citing studies supporting sunlight’s contribution to our mental wellness, Bobby reflects on how a well-placed window can bring natural light into an entire space. Maximizing natural light while maintaining privacy is something we’re always considering when designing the homes in our communities.

Bobby explores the connection between our interior spaces and the ways we can use design to positively impact our mental wellbeing. One way Tri Pointe Homes is working to improve physical well-being is ourHealthSmart® approach to finishes, filtration systems, and high-touch areas throughout the home. Some examples include:

  • MERV 13 air filters to reduce airborne contaminants and provide healthier air quality throughout the home.

  • Touch faucets at the kitchen sink providing a low-touch, high sanitization solution.

  • Low-formaldehyde insulation contributing to healthier indoor air quality.

  • Low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) products.

Bobby also highlights the need for versatility in today's homes and offers guidance on how to effectively establish a productive in-home workspace for your success. He points out that design should be both painless on the body and easy on the eyes in order to inspire productivity.

“Whether it’s sore wrists, chronic back issues, or stiff shoulders, pain takes up a lot of mental space. Imagine freeing up that space for what you actually need to focus on—and how much more productive you’ll be as a result.” -Bobby Berk

He continues to encourage readers to consider not only spaces for working, but spaces designed for resting and taking breaks in their home office. At Tri Pointe Homes, many of our new communities offer flex spaces and dedicated home offices that go a long way in helping you achieve that much needed work-life balance. Some communities even offer built-in shelving for extra storage in these spaces—because as Bobby says: “My general rule of thumb is to keep most things contained/out of sight for a more streamlined, focus-friendly (and mind calming) setup.”
