Bonita Falls
Who doesn’t love the sound of a roaring waterfall, especially when the summer temperatures heat up? About 48 miles from Atwell is Southern California’s second largest waterfall, Bonita Falls. The moderately easy 1.5-mile hike rewards with a great place to splash in Lytle Creek. Bring a picnic lunch and camp chairs for a relaxing afternoon waterside.
Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area
With 976 acres of water recreation, Silverwood Lake has something for every water lover. Swimmers can splash away at the recreation area’s two designated swim beaches on the lake’s south end. Life guards are on duty through Labor Day weekend. You can also bring your boat or rent one there to meander the lake’s shoreline. About an hour’s drive from Atwell, the park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., but boats must be trailered by sunset.
This beautiful stretch of beach about 60 miles from Banning has been drawing water enthusiasts since its founding as a state park in 1937. Visitors can access the beach via scenic trails leading from the day-use parking area. San Clemente State Beach is popular with surfers, both beginners and experts. A bit too adventurous? Spend your day here swimming, body surfing or just enjoying the sun and sound of the sea. At low tide, look for the rock formation at the park’s northern end where you can spot sea urchins, starfish, shore crab and other marine life.
Lake Perris State Recreation Area
Pack the sunscreen, snacks and beach towels, and hit the road for a day at Lake Perris, less than 30 minutes from Banning. Choose one of the shady picnic sites, many with great lake views, at the Moreno or Perris Beach swim areas. Lifeguards are on duty daily during the summer.
