When you live at Altis™ at Serenity in Fuquay-Varina, every day can be a vacation! There’s no need to travel far to find plenty of fun to explore. Get your summer staycation started at these unique North Carolina spots less than two hours from home.

Discover Raleigh’s magnificent museums.

With its abundance of museums, it’s no surprise that Raleigh is called the “Smithsonian of the South.” From natural sciences and railroad history to modern art, you are in luck here. And best of all, some major museums/collections are free to visit.

Spend some time strolling the North Carolina Museum of Art, ranked among the top 25 museums in the country by Business Insider, [KG1] [KS2] and its 164-acre Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park.

Learn about everything from whales and dinosaurs to the moon at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Railroads have been a part of the state’s history since the early 1900s, a legacy being preserved at the North Carolina Railway Museum’s New Hope Valley Railway. Check out this guide for even more Raleigh museums.

Play a round atPinehurst.

Spending a day on this legendary course is a bucket list dream for many golfers, and living at Serenity, it’s just a short drive away. Snap a selfie at the Payne Stewart Statue. Walk the Carolina Hotel’s Hallway of History. Dive into a slice of Mile High Key Lime Pie. And soothe your muscles with a massage at the resort’s award-winning spa.

Shop Southern Pines.

If perusing local shops is your idea of a perfect day, then head to historic downtown Southern Pines, about an hour from your Serenity home base. Power up with a pastry and cup of joe from Swank or Java Bean coffee houses on Broad Street. Then stroll through the unique shops along and surrounding Broad Street, like Against the Grain and One Eleven Main. Pick up a book from The Country Bookshop to enjoy in Serenity’s Retreat Garden later!

Get outdoors on Falls Lake.

Enjoy the stunning natural beauty surrounding Altis at Serenity with a day at Falls Lake State Recreation Area. Hike some of the 25 miles of trails, or rent a kayak or paddleboard from the marina next to Rolling View Access. The park is about an hour’s drive from home.

And more picks!

New Bern and Wilmington are also great staycation spots. And don’t miss the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro and the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson. The fact is, there’s no shortage of great nearby places to explore!
